Digitization has an effect on all aspects of our world and society. People are changing and therefore, the way business is done is changing as well, due to the risen expectations and demands of customers. In the Internet, another subject is the way we work nowadays and how cooporation in a company is changing.
There are countless articles about new work, working on eye level, empathy, appreciation, managers acting as supporters for the team. In the field of recruiting, new terms have arrived. Terms like employee branding, applicant experience, onboarding concepts and employee experience have become common. There are even companies nowadays, which offer consulting about how to practice good marketing, to trigger great experts. People who, are looking for a new position and a new challenge, are also becoming more demanding.
If recruiters and hr managers are working on a great experience to be more attractive for potential new colleagues, it is, imho, polite if the person, who’s looking for a new position, also spend some thoughts about how to give the people department a great experience, by sending applications which are created and realized with a lot of love for detail. Love comes from both sides, as they say.
I have spent a lot of time thinking, researching and creating a concept to provide an pleasant, convenient, comfortable and seamless HR experience. On this site, I would like to present the different facets of my application concept.
An online concept
More and more services are online nowadays. Models like Saas (Software as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) are becoming very popular. We’re using video rental services online and we’re getting used to have services availble 24/7 on all our devices. Therefore, I wanted to offer an online construction which can also be used 24/7 on any device (yeah well, on a smart watch istmight be a bit uncomfortable 🙂 )
It’s convenient when I apply initiative (without a job advertisement from the company). I don’thave to burden them with my files (although I have minified them) and the person who is responsible, can gain all the neccessary informations. Unfortunately German recruiters are not ready yet, even though application websites are not really old, but they are also not the latest in HR.
Business Model Me
Today the relationship between a company and the eployees has changed drastically. Many employees are experts in their field and therefore have a stronger self-awareness. I am quite a pragmatic man (Dutch people are pragmatic by nature). I see myself as a one-man company which sells his skills, expertise, background and his experiences for a monthly financial reward in return.
The company uses the above named features as a ressource and sells this ressource to their clients and writes invoices to make profit. Therefore I regard an employement as a partnership on eye level. I have bought the book and I have played around with the canvas. It is not ready yet and I assume it will never be finsihed. One changes continuously to improve and therefore, the canvas will change continuously also 🙂
Of course there’s a reason, that I did all this work. It is my marketing concept. Nothing more and nothing less. And I want to deliver a seamless experience to the people who are of interest for me, to become a person of interest for them. It’s all about business, right 😉 Therefore I addded an interactive element to both websites. A toolbar with clickable/tabbable icons which will connect directly to communication apps like WhatsApp, Skype and of course my Phone. No need to say, that my email adress is availablethere as well 🙂 All connected apps are and installed on my smartphone and on my laptop, to make sure that I potential partners can reach me any time and any place.
Colors create moods
I used to have another shade of blue than the current one. It was a lighter blue. But I never was 100% happy with that color. When I started to create a design for my new curriculum package, I started to look for a more “serious” color. Here you can see a logo in the previous lighter color.

It may be not be an extreme difference, but for me it looks more mature and professional. I like to compare it with fashion. If I like what I wear, I feel good and self-assured. This will have the effect, that people like what I am wearing and how I look 🙂 If I am happy with and convinced about my concept, the people will like it as well, because I present it with pride.
About this particular color
During my research, I used Google Image search. An approach I like to use when I am looking for something particular. Suddenly I saw a blue square, whose color appealed a lot to me. When I klicked the image, I was forwarded to this page: https://color-of-the-year.com/classic_blue. Classic blue is the color of the year 2020.

Fonts are an important part of a design
I like serif fonts for headlines on my sites. They remind me a bit of old physical newspapers, which were made of paper and ink 🙂 For contniuous texts, I prefer a text without serifs. Screens are always flaring and small letters with serifs are noisy for the user’s eyes.
The fonts are from Adobe. I have an Creative Cloud account and fonts are included in my package. The advantage is, that I can use them in my websites and also offline in my office applications. Saves loads of work 😉
By the way, these fonts are also used for this site.
My blog is exsisitng for quite some years now and I have changed it’s “outfit” often. But at the moment I am quite happy with the look and feel of my blog and I have gotten compliments from some visitors. Also for the content, of course 🙂 For this blog, I have used the same colors and the same fonts as I used in my online CV and my virtual print media. I used WordPress, because for this content management system a plugin was developed which adds PWA features to a blog. I describe PWA in an article on my blog. No need to say, that my blog is responsive and therefore adapts the size of the viewport on which my blog is read.
PDF into HTML
Like I have written at the beginning of this concept description, I regard it as very important to show my appreciation towards recruiter. It took me some time, to develop an elegant but clear design for my cv-pdf. I have my personal problems with MS Word 😉 I hate the layouting in this application. To make my life easier, I used PowerPoint, because it gives me all the freedom I need to be creative. Luckily PowerPoint offers DIN A4 format 🙂 🙂 But there are templates online available to download. I have created several files wih different layouts in the master section, to be prepared, if “unusual” content has t be inserted. of xourse all with the same header and footer section.
No need to say that I used the same colors and fonts, which I also use on my blog. As you can see on the image above, the layout of my online cv is the same as on my PDF. I created an exact copy of the PDF in HTML and transformed it into a Joomla Template. Joomla is a CMS (Content Management System) like WordPress. Of course, the layout changes according to the screen resolution.

On the picture above you can see how the divider, which is displayed in landscape view (at the right) to separate date and companies name and position from the task description, is turned into a border at the top and the right side of the title part in the left portrait view. I really enjoy to play around with subtle details, because thy make all the difference. Even if users might not notice. I know they’re exsisting 😉
By adding those two borders to the date and title, the entries will be separated more clearly, which makes it more comfortable and convenient vor the user, to read the texts in te career section.
On a tablet there is no difference between portrait and landscape view.
Virtual & physical print media
I spend quite a lot of time at my computer 😉 Although I am a, so called, boomer, in my mind I am a zoomer ( a term I discovered during a discussion on LinkedIn and which refers to the software wich enables virtual meetings). I am absolutely familiar with virtual communication, but I love to mingle with people in the physical world as well.
I love to attend different meet-ups in Berlin, to discuss and to learn from the people who are there. Networking is very important in our day and age and therefore, I have created business cards. Or as they’re called in China: Name Cards. This enables me, to be kept in mind by the people I am conncecting with offline.
I have two cards. One for my blog and one for my online cv. So I can choose, due to the situation, which card is more suitable.
As you can see on the picture,I have designed different logos. Actually I have created three, because I created an extra one for this page as well 🙂
For we’re living in multimedial times and the fact, that videos are getting more and more popular, I decided to give my online cv a multimedial feature. Instead of a static photo, I have added a video which replaces the, imho, boring letter of motivation. The video below is in English. My CV Site is multilingual. A German version can be watched there.
This video (which is also availble in German on the website) enables recruiters and HR managers to get a first VirtuPersonal (I just created a new word 😉 ) of me by hearing about my mindset and attitude. Than tey can decide quicker, if they want to get to know me in person or not. Saves time and effort 😉
